In every age the church needs men who have “understanding of the times” (1 Chr 12:32). J. Gresham Machen was such a man. When the gospel was at stake in the early 20th century, Machen did not shrink from controversy. With those of all denominations threatening the existence of the historic Christian faith, Machen dug in for the fight. He gave “clear-cut definitions of terms in religious matters” while popular preachers beclouded the blazing light of Christ’s truth. He battled to recover a message of divine grace and drive out naturalistic materialism. Though Machen’s work was written one hundred years ago, his book is prescient for our secular age when people prioritize pragmatism and subjective philosophy over the word of God. Machen models the courage to stand against the cultural morass moving men toward darkness.
